23 Mar:
After breakfast this morning, we visit the Dambulla Rock Temple and the Ancient City of Sigiriya.

Dating back to the 1st Century BC, this is the most impressive cave temple in Sri Lanka, measuring 500ft high and a mile around its base. It has five caves under a vast overhanging rock, carved with a drip line to keep the interiors dry. In the first Cave is a recumbent image of the Buddha, 47ft long cut out of the Rock. There are images of deities associated with Buddhism all around. The frescoes on the ceiling date back to the 15th - 18th Centuries. In the Second Cave, the finest and the largest of all, there are 150 life-sized statues of Gods from the Buddhist religion along with numerous images of the Buddha himself.

The Ancient City of Sigiriya is the most spectacular large stone and ancient rock fortress and palace ruin, located in the central Matale District of Sri Lanka and surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens, reservoirs, and other structures. A popular tourist destination, Sigiriya is renowned for its ancient frescos, which are reminiscent of the Ajanta Caves of India. It is one of the eight World Heritage Sites of Sri Lanka and is also declared by UNESCO as the 8th Wonder of the World.

Return to Dambulla, where we overnight at Amaya Lake. (B,D)

24 Mar:
After breakfast in this morning, we proceed to Kandy where we visit such sights as the Kandy Temple, the Spice gardens and witness the crafts of woodcarving, and Batik making.

Kandy is a city in the centre of Sri Lanka. It was the last capital of the ancient kings' era of Sri Lanka. The city lies in the midst of hills in the Kandy plateau, which crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. Kandy is one of the most scenic cities in Sri Lanka and is home to The Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of the most venerable places for the Buddhist community of Sri Lanka and all around the world. It was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1988.

After our tour we move onto Amaya Hills, where we overnight. Amaya Hills Hotel is a unique accommodation, containing architecture, interior design and costumes that give guests the feeling of being in a palace in the hills. A total of 100 rooms comprised of 91 deluxe twin or double rooms, 5 triple rooms and 4 suites are available at Amaya Hill Hotels; each room has the necessary modern conveniences for the most comfortable stay.

Overnight Amaya Hills. (B,D)

25 Mar:
After breakfast this morning we drive down to Bentota, stopping enroute to visit Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage. Located approximately 55 miles from Colombo, Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage houses abandoned and wounded elephants. The Orphanage was established in 1975, and over the years the number of elephants has increased to more than 65. Baby elephants have been brought in from various parts of the country and the orphanage has, as a result of a successful captive breeding program, 23 babies of their own.

The best time to visit is at feeding time from 0930-1000hrs and 1330-1400hrs and at bathing time from 1000-1030hrs and 1400-1430hrs when all the elephants are taken to the river.

We continue on to Eden Resort & Spa, where we spend the next 6 nights. The rest of the afternoon is at our own leisure to relax and enjoy the pleasures of the beach. Relax on a beach chair with a tropical cocktail and watch the sun set over the Indian Ocean. Walk on miles of pristine beaches as the sky and water merge as crimson and gold. Let our experienced massage therapists melt away the stress from your body at our elaborate spa.
