After breakfast this morning, we visit the Dambulla Rock Temple and the Ancient City of Sigiriya.
Dating back to the 1st Century BC, this is the most impressive cave temple in Sri Lanka, measuring 500ft high and a mile around its base. It has five caves under a vast overhanging rock, carved with a drip line to keep the interiors dry. In the first Cave is a recumbent image of the Buddha, 47ft long cut out of the Rock. There are images of deities associated with Buddhism all around. The frescoes on the ceiling date back to
the 15th - 18th Centuries. In the Second Cave, the finest and the largest of all, there are
150 life-sized statues of Gods from the Buddhist religion along with numerous images of the Buddha himself.
The Ancient City of Sigiriya is the most spectacular large stone and ancient rock fortress and palace ruin, located in the central Matale District of Sri Lanka and surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens, reservoirs, and other structures. A popular tourist destination, Sigiriya is renowned for its ancient frescos, which are reminiscent of the Ajanta Caves of India. It is one of the eight World Heritage Sites of Sri Lanka and is also declared by UNESCO as the 8th Wonder of the World.

The city lies in the midst of hills in the Kandy plateau, which crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. Kandy is one of the most scenic cities in Sri Lanka and is home to The Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of the most venerable places for the Buddhist community of Sri Lanka and all around the world. It was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1988.
